Microsoft this week released an update to the Teams app for iPad that adds an important new feature. With the new version, Microsoft Teams users on iPadOS can now connect and use external webcams rather than the iPad’s built-in camera.
It’s now possible to use an external webcam in Microsoft Teams for iPad
The new feature was made possible thanks to an API introduced last year with iPadOS 17, which enables support for external webcams and microphones connected via the USB-C port. At the same time, developers can add support for these accessories to their apps. Now Microsoft is making sure that iPad users can use an external webcam in the Teams app during calls.
“We’ve made connecting an external camera to your iPad a seamless experience. With support for iOS 17, Teams users can now easily leverage the capabilities of USB-C-connected cameras for higher-quality video conferencing,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
Currently, most USB-C webcams that work with the Mac also work on the iPad. Using an external webcam instead of the built-in camera can bring a lot of advantages, such as more flexibility to position the camera and even the possibility of using a higher resolution webcam.
Microsoft also notes that Teams on the iPad works with other camera-related features, such as Center Stage – which keeps the person centered and focuses as they move. “The integration of external cameras further enhances this flexibility, allowing users to switch seamlessly between built-in and external options depending on their needs.”
Microsoft Teams is available for iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro for free on the App Store. The app requires a device running iOS 16 or later, although support for external webcams requires an iPad with a USB-C port running iPadOS 17 or later.
