T-Mobile Removes Price Lock Guarantee for New Fiber Customers

There are many good reasons why you might want to buy fiber internet instead of relying on wireless internet. The biggest one is that you get much faster speeds, but the internet is also more reliable with less latency. That makes it perfect for households where you can really benefit from those improved specs.

Unfortunately, if you don’t have fiber internet at the moment and are planning to hop aboard T-Mobile’s train, there’s been a major change to its policy, and it is absolutely essential that you know this. The carrier has just removed its Price Lock policy for the new fiber customers—that means it can change its prices on you as it wishes.

New T-Mobile Fiber Customers Lose Access to the Carrier’s Price Lock Promise

One thing about digital services and platforms is that their prices increase. It is something that we expect to happen multiple times throughout the lifespan of these products and services, but the one thing that we hope for is that the price increases aren’t too frequent. For mobile carriers, it’s the reason why some put price guarantee policies in place—it protects you from being blindsided by a price hike.

T-Mobile has had such a policy in place for its fiber customers, which it calls Price Lock. However, things have changed a lot, and pretty silently at that too. According to The Mobile Report, as of yesterday, T-Mobile has removed its Price Lock “promotion” for all new Fiber customers, which means that it can increase prices for that service exactly as it pleases. That’s not a good sign. Even worse is how quietly it did so.

This theoretically means that T-Mobile can now freely increase its prices for anyone who subscribes to its fiber plans from here on out. With that in mind, new customers need to beware, because two or three years in, they might have seen more price hikes than they would have liked to, and there’ll be nothing they can do about it.

Existing T-Mobile Fiber Customers Get to Retain Their Price Lock Perks

To be completely clear, existing customers don’t need to worry as Price Lock is still in place for them. However, it is important to note that Price Lock isn’t as much of a “guarantee” as it used to be. The company now words it as a “promise”, which is much looser language. It’s still a commitment to keep prices steady, but if it does increase them, the only thing it will do for you is refund your previous month’s bill.

T-Mobile customers using the carrier’s regular 5G Home Internet won’t need to worry, as they’re unaffected as well.

However, this move should make T-Mobile customers aware that some of those privileges can be yanked out from under them. The company chose to paint Price Lock as a “promotion”, making it seem like it was merely a temporary perk. Sneaky, right? It’s important not to feel too safe that any promises the company has made towards you will be maintained.
