The PS5’s limited-time “classic themes” mimiced the overall aesthetic of older, retro PlayStation consoles. Now, though, Sony is removing these themes—but they might return in the future.
Sony has announced that it is removing four popular PlayStation 5 (PS5) console themes that gave their system’s user interface a nostalgic makeover, mirroring the look of classic PlayStation consoles. The themes, which debuted on the PlayStation line’s 30th anniversary (alongside the nostalgia-tinged PS5 Pro Anniversary Edition) emulate the aesthetic of the original PlayStation, the PS2, the PS3, and the PS4, and were only available for a limited time. Yet, they won over many PS5 owners using the nostalgia factor—personally, I dig the PlayStation 2’s aesthetics a lot and I really miss them, as much as they got slightly creepy when I was a kid and it misread the disc I put inside. Now, they’re sadly going away. At least for now.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sony addressed users’ concerns, thanking gamers for the “fantastic response” to those retro themes. The company also confirmed that due to the overwhelmingly positive reception, the company is actively working to bring the themes back in the “months ahead.” A specific timeframe wasn’t provided for when these themes will become a permanent fixture on the PS5, but the “months ahead” bit sounds like it might happen this year. There’s no way to know right now, though.
These were also exciting due to the fact that unlike the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5’s UI isn’t typically customizable with themes, which is a bummer—you might see special backgrounds when you go and start a game, but that’s pretty much it. The company confirmed that there aren’t any plans to introduce other new themes, so if you want to customize your PS5 at all, you’ll need to wait for the return of these classic backgrounds.
