Microsoft 365 VPN is shutting down permanently, and Microsoft has confirmed that the privacy protection feature in the Defender app will disappear from Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. They’ve also advised Android users to remove the Defender VPN profile from their device settings, though keeping it won’t cause issues.
Microsoft Defender VPN is going away for good
Brands are actively removing unnecessary features, with Google One’s VPN service shutting down last year because it struggled to gain significant traction among users. Samsung then stripped Bluetooth from the S Pen on the Galaxy S24 Ultra this year.
Now, Microsoft is following suit by shutting down the VPN feature in its Defender app. You will lose access to privacy protection on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, with support officially ending on February 28, 2025.
On the other hand, iOS users will still see a loop-back VPN for web protection. It isn’t a complete VPN that changes your IP or encrypts all your traffic. Instead of routing your internet traffic through external servers, it creates a local VPN tunnel within the device.Â
For example, if you’re browsing a site with potentially harmful content, the loop-back VPN intercepts that request and blocks access before it reaches your device. So, while using Safari or any other app that connects to the web, the VPN checks every URL to see if it’s safe.Â
Why Microsoft discontinued Defender’s VPN service
Microsoft said the reason for their VPN service removal is low usage, and they want to focus on security tools that better fits user needs.Â
Our goal is to ensure you, and your family remain safer online. We routinely evaluate the usage and effectiveness of our features. As such, we are removing the privacy protection feature and will invest in new areas that will better align to customer needs.
Microsoft
The Microsoft 365 VPN is a bonus with your subscription and should be appreciated. But it was more of a basic privacy tool than a serious VPN. It had a 50GB monthly limit and didn’t let users choose their servers, instead automatically connecting to the nearest Microsoft VPN server. Â
It’s why many people who wanted a VPN for content access or privacy skipped it. Also, it was bundled with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Technically, you still paid for it.
Microsoft assures you that much hasn’t changed, besides the update to how the VPN works on Android. All other features, including data protection, identity theft monitoring, and threat alerts, remain the same in the USA. You still need a subscription to access these features.
Explore VPN alternatives
If you’re seeking alternatives for the Microsoft 365 VPN, NordVPN is a good place to start. They’ve just launched a new protocol meant to bypass restrictions and maintain a secure connection in filtered network environments. There’s also ExpressVPN, popular for its privacy, ease of use, and speed, as well as the budget-friendly Surfshark with unlimited connections.
