A Harris County deputy recently stepped in to save the day for an elderly woman who was just moments away from losing over $13,000. It all happened at a convenience store where she stood in front of a Bitcoin ATM, looking a bit puzzled.

During his break, Deputy W. Mendez of the Motorists Assistance Program (MAP) noticed the woman and decided to check in on her. At first, Sheriff Gonzalez says she ignored him, which seemed a bit odd. But he didn’t give up. Standing in front of her, he gently asked what was going on. That’s when she admitted she was told not to talk to police.

Authorities say the woman explained she had received a message claiming her bank account was hacked. The instructions were to withdraw her money and deposit it into the Bitcoin ATM. Thankfully, Deputy Mendez’s intervention came just in time, and she hadn’t yet deposited her money.
This quick-thinking deputy’s actions highlight how important it is to be alert and proactive, especially when it comes to protecting people from scams. It’s a reminder that a little vigilance can go a long way in keeping our communities safe.
