Recent updates to Android Auto displays have resulted in reports of dropped connections, phone reboots, and wireless connectivity that refuses to work. If you’ve been having similar issues, you’re not alone, and Google is aware of the situation.
It seems some recent Android Auto updates, versions 13.4 and 13.5, released in January and February, might be the culprits behind these frustrating issues. Users have taken to Reddit and Google’s own Android Auto community forums to vent their frustrations. While there are a few various issues, the most common seems to be wireless connections being unreliable.
Some users report their phones are rebooting unexpectedly when attempting to connect wirelessly to their vehicles. Others are experiencing complete wireless connection failures, with their phone simply refusing to pair with their car. For some, a wired connection seems to be the only reliable way to use Android Auto. Complaints on Google’s forums mention how Bluetooth connections have been dropping frequently or only working for a while after a phone reboot.
Google has acknowledged the issue. In a statement to The Verge, the company confirmed they are “aware of the issue” and “currently investigating a fix.” However, no estimated timeline for when that fix will be sent out has been provided.
The good news is it doesn’t appear that these problems are showing up for the majority of Android Auto users. Versions 13.6 and 13.7 are currently available, though we’re not certain if these include the fixes yet. Check the Play Store for Android Auto updates if you’ve been having troubles.
Obviously, as anyone who uses Android Auto or Apple CarPlay can attest, wireless connectivity makes these devices much, much easier to use. Being forced back to a wired connection is like going back to manual screen brightness controls on your phone. Hopefully, a fix is issued soon.
