1Password is a hub for many users’ most sensitive data. It’s not just for passwords, but also secure notes, credit card info, codes, and more. And now, all of that data can be surfaced based on your location thanks to a new feature that just launched.
Location can now be assigned to 1Password items for access when nearby
Danny Grenzowski writes at the 1Password blog:
This feature allows you to assign specific locations to items stored in your vaults, which then appear in the 1Password mobile app when you’re near those physical locations.
[…]
With just a few steps, you can enable this feature and add one physical location to any 1Password item, new or existing, by editing that item and selecting Add a location. Then, when you arrive at that specific location, the item will appear in the home tab of the 1Password mobile app. Map view is also available to easily set and view locations of items.
There’s a full support document here outlining the necessary steps to set up locations for different items in your 1Password vaults.
Importantly, the feature has been built with user privacy in mind. The post notes, “1Password checks for relevant items locally, meaning your current location coordinates never leave your device. We also added an additional layer of protection explicitly around the loading of map data, so you have more granular control.”
9to5Mac’s Take
This looks like a great new feature for those times you need to quickly re-visit a specific code, login, or secure note over and over. I’d love to see something similar offered in Apple’s Passwords app.
Perhaps this would push privacy boundaries too far, but it would also be nice if 1Password could surface relevant logins automatically based on my location, without me needing to manually add specific locations to items. For example, if the app detects that I’m at a Starbucks, it could automatically surface my login for the Starbucks account. That could prove really handy.
