Starting from iOS 18.1, you can set ChatGPT as the default search engine in Safari. Here’s how to use the LLM service for your browser queries.
With Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, Apple provides OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration into several features of iOS. OpenAI also has a ChatGPT app (Free) which you can download from the App Store.
Once you have ChatGPT installed in iOS, you can use it as your default search engine within Safari.
While Apple currently doesn’t provide a direct way to set OpenAI as your default search engine in iOS specifically, you can effectively enable it as the default for searches in Safari. It does require a few more steps than the typical changing of the default search.
How to set ChatGPT as default Safari search on iOS
- Make sure the ChatGPT app is installed on your device.
- Open the Settings app and tap on Apps->Safari.
- Turn on the toggle switch under Extensions->ChatGPT Search.
- There’s also a switch for Allow in Private Browsing.
- In the Permissions->google.com section, tap Allow.
- Exit the Settings app.
Now if you run Safari and type text in its search bar, it will ask ChatGPT to perform the search for you.
This is a great addition to iOS and Safari as it makes searching via ChatGPT seamless and easy. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more AI integration options from Apple in the near future.
