Trump enacts 90-day pause for most tariffs, but raises China’s to 125%

Today was the first day that huge tariffs went into effect for most US imports, but it seems the impact will be short-lived—at least for many. President Trump has just enacted a 90-day pause on the most severe of the tariffs, with China a major exception. As a result, risk to Apple may be lessened, but they certainly aren’t in the clear.

Tariffs for China increase, but most nations get relief in pause

Trump just posted the following on Truth Social:

Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Although many businesses are certainly breathing a sigh of relief at the tariff pause, Apple likely isn’t one of them.

The company’s dependence on China for its product supply chain is well known. Even as it’s diversified over the years to build more products in places like India and Vietnam, the bulk of Apple manufacturing still happens in China.

As a result, Apple is more vulnerable than most to the impact of an escalating trade war between the US and China.

But as with all things tariff-related, there’s so much uncertainty still afoot. I’m sure we’ll hear more before long.

We’ll keep you posted on updates as relate to Apple moving forward.
