At the moment, speculation among experts and within the mobile community is running rampant. But the typical consensus that followed from this update is that the upcoming smartphone could feature either the current-generation Dimensity 9300, the soon-to-be-announced Dimensity 9300+, or the future Dimensity 9400.
As for the specific manufacturing partner, there is a definite trend towards OnePlus, since the OnePlus Pad had originally used a Dimensity 9000 chipset. That being said, a considerable number of people also think that Motorola could be the partner, as MediaTek already collaborated with the subsidiary on a significant number of U.S.-released models, albeit limited to mid-range offerings such as the Motorola Edge 2023 and the Moto G Power (2024).
Other manufacturers like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Redmi are far less likely candidates, since their U.S. market presence is mostly limited to third-party sellers, plus the lack of dominant official releases to the region.
Upward Competition
MediaTek’s Dimensity series, introduced in 2019, has been challenging Qualcomm’s dominance in the global market by offering high-performance, feature-rich chipsets at competitive prices. The series’ success has even positioned the company as a very viable alternative in the U.S. where Snapdragon chipsets have long been the preferred choice at higher product tiers.
Therefore, MediaTek’s upward entry into the U.S. flagship/premium smartphone market would bring another dimension to the competition, as well as variety to an otherwise largely monopolized market segment (at least in one country).
In fact, MediaTek’s offerings have become increasingly on par with Qualcomm’s chipsets recently, as proven by how a lot of the chipsets in the Dimensity 9000 series are keeping up with their Snapdragon equivalents in 2023 and 2024.
Amidst Global Tension
The company’s move into the US flagship segment comes at a time when the smartphone industry is undergoing significant changes, driven in part by geopolitical factors shaking up the globe as of late. These multi-national developments have led to restrictions and sanctions on some Chinese manufacturers, particularly Huawei.
As a result, there is an opportunity for Taiwanese chipset providers like MediaTek to fill the void and offer competitive solutions to smartphone makers that want to overcome these economic hurdles.
