Summary
- A Printables member used a Raspberry Pi Zero W and thermal printer to create a Polaroid-style camera.
- The camera has a green knob/button for taking photos, image preview screen, and LED lights.
- Parts include Raspberry Pi Zero W, camera, thermal printer, battery, screen, and more.
Humble Raspberry Pi computers have been the brains powering a huge variety of projects. People have shown they can create just about anything with a Pi, and that now includes Polaroid-style instant cameras.
Printables member Spacerower has been working on this project for a while, and the result is incredibly impressive. With the help of a Raspberry Pi Zero W and a thermal printer, they were able to create a compact device that can take a photo and print it out in black and white stickers. It’s quite a sophisticated build.

5 Raspberry Pi Projects I’d Totally Do If I Had the Time
If you have a ton of time on your hands, then I really hope you make these Raspberry Pi projects for me. I want to make them myself, but I just don’t have the time, however cool or useful they are. Like most Raspberry Pi projects, they’ll be fun to make, I’m sure. Everyone will enjoy using them, no doubt. But the time to accomplish it, I do not have. Here’s five Raspberry Pi projects that I’d build if I had the extra time (and cash).
At the top of the camera, there’s a big green knob that also acts as a button. Pressing the knob takes a photo, and rotating it adjusts the brightness. A preview of the image is shown on a small 240×240 screen. When you’ve got something you like, long-pressing the button prints it out. To make things simple, the device uses the Raspberry Pi Camera v1.3.
In addition to compiling the parts and programming them to work together, Spacerower also designed a 3D-printable camera body to house everything. The finished product is surprisingly compact and camera-like. It even has some LED indicator lights, presumably to show battery charging progress.
Here’s the full list of parts:
- Raspberry pi Zero W
- EM5820 thermal printer
- 2s 1200mah li-ion battery
- raspberry pi camera v1.3
- 2 green, 2 red leds
- ST7789 240×240 SPI screen
- EC11 rotary encoder (D profile)
- 2s lipo protection board
- 2s usb lipo charger
- 5V BEC module
- usb C female port
- 2 3x6x8 aluminium bushings
- 6 1×6 round magnets
- 4 9x3x1.5 magnets
- A variety of m2 m2.5 and m3 bolts
This is one of many highly creative and impressive Raspberry Pi projects that we’ve seen over the years. People have made BlackBerry-like handheld Linux computers, arcade cabinets, smart mirrors, all kinds of dashboards, Android TV boxes, and so, so much more.
