Microsoft’s Copilot test within Microsoft Photos probably won’t be part of its redemption arc. While the company is testing a Copilot button within Photos, it arguably doesn’t do really…anything?
Anything that you can’t find anywhere else, let’s say. Microsoft said Monday that it’s rolling out a beta of the Photos app with a Copilot button that will appear at the top of the screen. Here’s what it does, according to Microsoft:
- “Photo Editing Tips: Get expert advice on enhancing your images.
- Image Insights: Discover interesting details about your photos.
- Framing Suggestions: Improve your photography skills with personalized recommendations.”
If you’d like tips on how to take better photos, there are numerous tutorials around the web, both in video and in text form. It’s also not clear what Photos will have to offer in terms of “framing suggestions” as well as insights about your image. Hopefully you already understand these insights already?
What Microsoft appears to be hinting at is that it wants to bring more visual AI to Windows. The Microsoft Edge browser already has Copilot Vision, which can “see” what you are looking at. Presumably, some of these capabilities will eventually be arriving on the Photos app.
But with many people cheering after Windows accidentally removed Copilot from their PCs, it’s not clear whether adding a (for now) rather useless Copilot button to Windows will win them back.
The new copilot button is part of Photos app version 2025.11030.20006.0, which is slowly being rolled out via the Microsoft Store.
