AMD grants free access to FidelityFX Super Resolution source code, announces other FSR updates

AMD has a lot of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) updates to share. First and foremost, July 16, 2021, will be the day that Arcadegeddon and Necromunda: Hired Gun gain FSR support, with Resident Evil Village and Edge of Eternity to follow two weeks later. Counting those, 12 games will support FSR.

That’s the consumer-side benefit of the FSR news. On the developer side, AMD has a much bigger announcement to make: “Starting today on GPUOpen, you can get access to the AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution source code for free under the open source MIT License, get FSR documentation, and download a new sample that shows off FSR and lets you view the different FSR modes and see how they impact image quality and performance.”

Another big announcement is that FSR is now available in both Unity and Unreal Engine. AMD has a few more interesting nuggets sprinkled throughout its FSR update post, so be sure to check it out if all this content sounds applicable to you.

FSR is coming to Baldur’s Gate 3, Far Cry 6, Myst, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodhunt, and many more games. So what exactly is it? If you haven’t read up on FidelityFX Super Resolution, know that it’s a technology that allows games to increase performance and visuals output simultaneously. Since those two areas usually involve tradeoffs with each other, FSR is a big boon for gamers.

NVIDIA has its own form of FSR called DLSS, though it differs from AMD’s offering in a variety of ways (such as the fact that it’s exclusive to NVIDIA GPUs, whereas AMD’s FSR is available to all of the best graphics cards).
