Google held a pre-Google I/O event to tell users what’s coming in the latest updates for Android, Wear OS, Gemini and more.
The live stream that moves Android out of its main event spot on Google I/O gave users updates on what they can expect from Android 16, as well as Wear OS 6 for smartwatches. Google also revealed Gemini is coming to pretty much every device in your Google locker.
Let’s dive in…
Android 16 redesign
Android 16 is launching on Pixel devices in June, while Samsung devices (among others) will start to see the update later in the summer.
The biggest update this year is the Material 3 Expressive user experience that Google calls the “biggest evolution” of the Android design experience in years. Google says it’s flexible, customisable, and personal to your needs.
There are loads of neat little “natural and springy” animation quirks, with motion physics adding loads of little joyful moments throughout the OS. Dismissing notifications feels smooth, for instance, and there’s a nice haptic rumble when the action has been complete.
In the multitasking view, when you attempt to swipe up to close and app, you’ll see the cards either side hug together. Google says widgets and icons line-up a little neater on the home screen.
Google also says it is giving users the option to cram more icons into the quick settings area, while everything mentioned will be noticed across key Android apps like Gmail and Fitbit.
Google also referenced the new Live Updates, which bring live information from apps like Uber Eats, without you having to enter the app itself.
The best Pixel phone users will see the new Material 3 Expressive design first. It’s coming to Wear OS and Android Auto too.
Wear OS 6
Speaking of Wear OS, Google chose to briefly reveal the update for devices like the Pixel Watch during the Android Show.
Just like inn Android 16, Material 3 Expressive will mean a more expressive UI with fluid animations and transitions. There are softer, more rounded corners to design elements. Lists transform as you scroll vertically, with Google proud of the sense of depth, Google says. Google says improvements to the OS will mean a 10% battery improvement on Wear OS 5.
Google also says Gemini is coming to Wear OS 6. More on that below.
Gemini everywhere
Google revealed the Gemini AI is going to roll out to Android Auto and cars with Google built in, as well as Wear OS 6 and Google TV. Oh and it’s coming to Android XR – the new mixed reality platform Google is making with Samsung too.
Some of the examples Google explained showed a revolved around going hands-free.
For example, a Pixel Watch owner on Wear OS told Gemini to “remember I’m using locker 43″ at the gym,” while sourcing informations from Gmail like “where’s the restaurant Emily emailed about” to receive a summary and a look on the Map without pausing a workout.
Google says Android Auto and cars with Android built-in are also getting Gemini to help focus on driving.
A user was shown asking Gemini to find a car charging station on the way to a post office near a park, so they could take a walk while driving. It’ll also be possible to summarise and reply to messages complete with emojis and the ability to translate before sending. You can ask for a news update without sports too, for instance, while seeking discussion points before your book club meeting from Gemini Live.
On the TV you could ask for age appropriate movies or get educational YouTube recommendations for kids.
We’re gonna hear more about Android XR during I/O but Google says Gemini will be great for planning a vacation while surrounded by windows showcasing videos, maps and local tips to help you plan an itinerary.
Gemini will offer personalised smart help wherever you are on whatever screen you’re using, Google says.
