As the state of California gradually begins to reopen, companies are starting to envision what the post-pandemic workplace will look like.
Apple Inc., the largest public company employer in the Silicon Valley, recently released a detailed re-entry plan to transition employees back into the workplace.
Starting in September, most Apple employees will be expected to be in the office three times a week. According to an email sent by CEO Tim Cook, employees are required to be in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and will have the option to work remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays.
For employees who are part of a team that needs to work in person, they might have to return to a four- or five-day workweek depending on the team.
In addition to the day-to-day re-entry plan, Cook laid out a plan to allow workers to take two weeks a year to work remotely, intending to give employees the opportunity to work in different locations or spend more time with friends and family.
However, some Apple employees are reportedly not happy with the details of this plan, and in a widely circulated letter sent just two days later and edited by more than 80 employees, have asked company executives to allow individual teams of employees to make their own decisions about how they would like to handle the remote vs. in-person work balance.
