Apple cider donuts a big hit at Lafayette Apple Festival

The 49th annual Lafayette Apple Festival started Saturday. From apple cider to apple fritters to donuts, it was a weekend filled with all things apple.

Inside the Country Kitchen, you can find Troop 100 assistant scout master Chris Somerlot and his Boy Scouts battering it up as they prepare to make about 3,000 apple cider donuts for the Lafayette Apple Festival.

“It’s a pre-made mix that has flower, some egg, little bits of apples and basically powdered cider,” Somerlot said.

Somerlot says precision is everything.

“These machines are set for a certain amount of cook time and all that stuff and how much air is in the mix determines how well they float in the oil,” Somerlot said. “It’s a game of consistency.”

Every helping hand is needed because it’s a busy donut making day.

“And when the weather is good, you don’t notice the clock until it’s done but that’s part of the fun,” Somerlot

About 20 boys and girls are a part of Troop 100. The money made over the two days helps fund events throughout the year which includes a load of adventures at Camp Sabattis in the Adirondacks.

“Shotguns, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, those things,” Troop 100 boy scout Logan Booher said.
