The Cannes Film Festival has hosted the world premiere of “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” the first Apple TV+ music documentary to have a feature-length Apple Vision Pro immersive video edition.
The new Apple TV+ documentary will be released in both 8K and 180-degree versions, marking the first time a feature-length special has been released in the Apple Immersive Video format. While it will have been the 8K edition that was shown at Cannes, the Apple Vision Pro version places the headset wearer onstage with Bono.
According to Apple, the documentary is a “bold and lyrical exploration of Bono’s one man show,” and is directed by Andrew Dominik. Australian director Dominik previously documented Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ recording of their sixteenth album, in a film called “One More Time With Feeling.”
Ahead of the screening, Bono told Deadline magazine that shooting in Apple Immersive Video made the film “really playful.”
“I know Apple are dying to make the Vision Pro more affordable and more democratic, but they’re committed to innovation, they’re committed to experimenting,” he said. “They know not everyone can afford this, but they’re still going for it, believing that some way down the line, it’ll make financial sense for them.”
“But the fact that they may have to wait a while is not putting them off,” he continued.
Presented as one of the Cannes Film Festival’s “Special Screenings,” the new “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” was shown on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The two versions — one for Apple Vision Pro — will be released worldwide on Apple TV+ starting on Friday, May 30.
Apple Immersive Video has been brought to the fore in the Apple Vision Pro’s latest update to visionOS 2.5. That release gave immersive videos their own section in the Apple TV app.
