Apple just shipped a firmware update for AirPods Max users who have the original Lightning model, the first such update since all the way back in October. Here’s what you should know.
Latest firmware likely brings bug fixes to the original AirPods Max
Firmware updates for Apple’s various AirPods products don’t typically follow the standard iOS release cycle. Occasionally they do, but usually Apple will ship firmware updates on a completely different schedule—often to provide bug fixes and performance improvements.
The latest AirPods Max (Lightning) firmware released today is build 6F25.
This new release replaces the 6F21 firmware released in October.
Release notes for that prior update were short and simple:
Bug fixes and other improvements
Apple has yet to provide release notes for the new 6F25 build, but it’s likely we’ll see more of the same language for this update.
Occasionally “bug fixes” include tweaks to features like Active Noise Cancellation, so it will be interesting to see if there are any noticeable differences implemented for users.
One reason why new features are unlikely for this release is that there is no big iOS software version expected soon that this update could be providing new features for. iOS 18.4 is now available in beta, but its full public launch won’t come until early April. So bug fixes are likely the main change here.
How to update your AirPods Max firmware
To update your AirPods Max firmware, follow these steps from Apple:
- Make sure that your AirPods Max are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
- Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
- Wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
- Reconnect your AirPods Max to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Check the firmware version again.
If you still can’t update your firmware, reset your AirPods Max, then try to update your firmware again.
