JamBase continues to celebrate Women’s History Month by featuring Apple Music’s “Visionary Women” playlists for this edition of Saturday Stream. Apple Music stated the following regarding the collection of playlists that were curated by Loretta Lynn, St. Vincent, Yola and more, writing:
“Apple Music is highlighting women who are leaders in their field, breaking records, topping charts, and inspiring others through their work, advocacy, and influence within pop culture and beyond. Apple Music listeners can enjoy a diverse range of “Visionary Women” curated playlists from artists and influencers from all over the world.”
Others tapped this year by Apple to curate “Visionary Women” playlists include Cardi B, Jazmine Sullivan, Alessia Cara, KAROL G, Tove Lo, Saweetie, Remi Wolf, BLACKPINK singer ROSÉ, Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee, actor/singer Cara Delevingne, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Sasha Sakharnaya, Celeste, Arlo Parks, Lola Indigo, Natasha Abel, Camille Lellouche, Romy, Carly Pearce, children’s author Malorie Blackman and bassist/composer Linda May Han Oh.
Loretta Lynn’s “Visionary Women” playlist consists of many country classics by the likes of Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette and others. Lynn also selected songs by Trisha Yearwood, Shina Twain, Martina McBride and Crystal Gayle as well as recent Lynn collaborators Margo Price and Carrie Underwood.
The second St. Vincent-curated playlist featured this month features “Didn’t It Rain” by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who was the subject of last week’s Saturday Stream WHM playlist.
“When people ask me about my favorite guitar players, I say look no further than Sister Rosetta Tharpe,” Annie Clark (St. Vincent) told Apple Music. Alongside Tharpe are Clark-selected recordings by Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Big Mama Thorton, Odetta and Nina Simone as well as ones by Dua Lipa, Savages, Lana Del Rey, Bjork, Sleater-Kinney and many more.
Yola also praised and included music by Sister Rosetta Tharpe in her “Visionary Women” playlist, telling Apple Music:
“[Tharpe] was a singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist who helped create what we know as rock ‘n’ roll. The entire landscape of popular music would be missing its most famous and celebrated sons and daughters without Tharpe’s influence.”
Yola placed her contemporaries like Mickey Guyton, Brittany Howard, Laura Mvulva and Janelle Monáe with Tharpe and other influences. Among those selected by Yola were tracks by The Staples Singers, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan and Minnie Riperton.
