Last Thursday the Belgium news site Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN) revealed that Belgium-based Belfius Bank confirmed that their Bancontact card is set to support Apple Pay by the end of 2022. Local Apple iPhone and Apple Watch users will be able to take advantage of this new service to easily pay contactlessly in stores
Customer can activate Apple Pay in the Belfius app under the ‘More’ tab. The functionality is currently only accessible for Visa and MasterCard credit cards from the bank. Bancontact and Maestro debit cards will become available “later this year.”
Belfius claims that it will become the first Belgian bank to also offer Apple Pay on Bancontact. “Later this year, Belfius and Banx customers will be able to pay with Bancontact via Apple Pay,” Bancontact Payconiq Company reports to our editors.
Prior to the official announcement this week, 9to5Mac was first to discover references to Bancontact in a test version of the iPhone’s operating system in mid-April. For more, read the full HLN report (translation required).
