Apple picking pickle: Summer drought puts hold on autumn favorite

People may have to hold off on apple picking in Minnesota.

The apple crop is delayed by a couple of weeks because of the drought.

Minnetonka Orchards was scheduled to open this past weekend but now is opening on Labor Day weekend.

“Apples aren’t turning red like we want them to, but they’re getting there,” Rita Johnson with Minnetonka Orchard said. “They’ll be ready on Labor Day weekend.”

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture says apples may be smaller this year but could have a better taste.
