Apple’s primary MacBook supplier Quanta Computer is reportedly considering moving some of its production to Vietnam, according to a paywalled report by DigiTimes that claims sources have said the supplier is mulling the idea of relocating some of its Mac production lines, although no official plans have been confirmed.
Over recent months, Apple has been pushing suppliers to explore moving factories outside of China, with tensions between the U.S. a key driving force behind the move.
Apple currently manufactures its MacBooks in China, where the machines are assembled by Quanta Computer and Foxconn.
Corroborating on the claims, the Wall Street Journal recently published a report claiming that Apple has “accelerated plans” to shift some of its production outside China, saying that the iPhone maker is looking to reduce dependence on Taiwanese assemblers and produce more products elsewhere in Asia, particularly India and Vietnam.
It is unknown whether Quanta Computer will go ahead with the planned expansion into Vietnam, with DigiTimes claiming that a spokesperson for the manufacturing company refused to provide any comment on the report.
