Apple is reportedly planning to release new USB-C charging cases for all AirPods models next year, according to respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says despite the plan, Apple’s rumored new AirPods Pro 2, expected to be announced later this year, will likely launch with a Lightning charging case before an updated USB-C version is released in the months after.

The report follows after Kuo said earlier this year that he expects Apple could drop the Lightning port from accessories such as the MagSafe Battery Pack and Magic Keyboard in favor of USB-C in future updates, as Apple faces pressure from regulators to adopt the standardized USB-C port on future products, including the iPhone.

This isn’t the first time Kuo has suggested that Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro will launch with a Lightning charging case. In May, the analyst said Apple was on track to begin mass production of the earbuds during the second half of the year, reporting that the new AirPods will be produced outside of China and manufactured in Vietnam, suggesting that the charging case will continue to use Lightning and not USB-C.

Rumors have long speculated on what upgrades Apple will introduce with its next-gen AirPods Pro. Rumors have suggested that the earbuds will feature a major redesign, with the iPhone maker expected to remove the short stem found on the current models to give the earbuds a similar design to the Beats Fit Pro which sit inside a listener’s ear without any overhang, an improved chip, and health monitoring features.
