Apple TV+ hopes its next Ted Lasso is here with new golf comedy

Apple has had a strong spring of new TV shows, and heading into the summer there’s no slowing down. Coming next month, the golf comedy Stick looks like the next Apple TV+ attempt at striking Ted Lasso gold.

New golf comedy ‘Stick’ debuts on Apple TV+ soon

Ted Lasso fans have been spoiled by the abundance of other Apple TV+ shows from series co-creator Bill Lawrence. Shrinking and Bad Monkey are both among the best shows Apple offers, but they feel fairly distinct from Lasso’s formula—especially Bad Monkey.

But with Apple’s new show Stick (not affiliated with Lawrence), it hopes to have the next proper Ted Lasso-style series on its hands.

Stick stars Owen Wilson and premieres on Wednesday, June 4 with its first three episodes, followed by weekly releases through July 23.

Here’s Apple’s summary of the show, followed by its just-released trailer:

In “Stick,” Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After the collapse of his marriage and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce hedges his bets, and future, entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi (Peter Dager). “Stick” is a heartfelt, feel-good sports comedy about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.

Stick borrows from Ted Lasso in more ways than one

Apple is clearly trying to tug the Ted Lasso heartstrings with Stick.

The show’s summary calls it “a heartfelt, feel-good sports comedy” and Wilson’s character feels a lot like Sudeikis’ Lasso.

Both play coach-type roles, have mental health struggles, and thrive in their “found family.”
