Apple TV+’s Workplace Thriller Delivers Taut Trailer

Adam Scott and John Turturro headline Apple TV+’s subversive workplace original series Severance, with a trailer delivering some dystopian menace.

While Adam Scott may have built a solid comedy career, starring in everything from Parks and Recreation to the returning sitcom Party Down, he is about to take on a much darker role in the upcoming Apple TV+ original series Severance. Apple TV+ has released the series’ first trailer, which features a toxically dystopian workplace with sinister science fiction flourishes and Big Brother surveillance undertones.

Created by Dan Erickson, the series follows Scott, who plays a mild-manner white collar office worker named Mark. He works for Lumon Industries, a company that has its staff undergo a process known as “severance.” The process severs recipients’ memories so they lose all memory of their personal life while at the workplace and lose all memory of what they did at work as soon as they leave company property. In a tense trailer for the thriller series, Mark suffers from the side effects of this process, which impacts his psyche as he attempts to ascertain what exactly he does for a living while his corporate superiors cooly monitor his behavior.

Scott is joined by an all-star cast including John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette and Britt Lower. Apple TV+ gave Severance a straight-to-series order in November 2019, signing Ben Stiller to direct six out of nine of the series’ first season episodes, with Aoife McArdle directing the remaining three. Stiller also executive produces the project through his production Red Hour Productions, joined by fellow executive producers McArdle, Scott and Erickson. Principal photography began October 2020 in New York City and wrapped June 2021. Severance premieres with its first two episodes Friday, Feb. 18, with the following seven episodes released weekly on Fridays.

Severance joins Apple TV+’s growing library of original content, with the premium streaming service steadily unveiling new television series and films since its launch on Nov. 1, 2019. As of July 2021, the digital platform reportedly boasts just under 20 million subscribers worldwide, with estimates placing it on track to reach 36 million subscribers by 2026. The streaming service boasts critically acclaimed original programming, including the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning comedy series Ted Lasso and workplace comedy Mythic Quest, while offering a selection of licensed television and film programming in its library.

Created by Dan Erickson, Severance premieres Feb. 18 on Apple TV+, with new episodes premiering Fridays on the premium streaming service.
