Apple Watch Series 8 Leak Describes Surprising Design Change

There’s just been another report on what the next Apple Watch is going to look like. Across the last 18 months, there have been rumors, adopted by many reliable analysts, that an all-new Apple Watch design was coming, with flat edges, a bigger screen and a look that was really different.

Trouble is, those rumors were for Apple Watch Series 7 and, although the current Watch does have a subtly altered design, it was nowhere near what the leaks had led us to expect.

While some analysts had a lot of egg on their face, one leaker, @VNchocoTaco, also known as ShrimpApplePro, had claimed that the rumored designs were plain wrong.

That leaker has today revealed what they think is coming with Apple Watch Series 8.

Design

Although in May they tweeted that a new flat front glass display was on the cards, now they are specific about the new design, saying, “Design: sadly it’s staying the same as the series 7 with no design improvement.”

That doesn’t mean to say there won’t be some change to the much-anticipated Apple Watch Pro, which Mark Gurman at Bloomberg claims will be a bigger device with an evolution of the current design.

But for Series 8, the design won’t change, it seems. I like the Series 7 design, so I’m not disappointed.

But ShrimpApplePro also has more information, such as the colors.

Colors

In aluminum, Series 8 will come in four colors, Midnight, Starlight, PRODUCT(RED) and silver. This is a big change from Series 7 which is available in Midnight, Starlight, PRODUCT(RED), blue and a rather fetching green. But plenty of customers complained there was no neutral color like silver, though to my mind Starlight is the best of the new shades anyway. Even so, I’m slightly surprised that Apple will go from five colors to four.

For the stainless-steel Watch, we can expect no change in colors at all, with silver, graphite and gold as now. That’s also the same as the Series 6 colors, so again I’m cautious about what ShrimpApplePro is saying as it feels like there could be a gentle change this time.

Note that even when Apple sticks to the same colors, they are almost always slightly changed with each successive year, so the gold stainless steel one year can be quite pale, the next quite yellow.

Size

Just like this year, there will be two sizes, measuring 41mm and 45mm—though the much-rumored Apple Watch Pro could be bigger, ShrimpApplePro isn’t commenting on that. The Series 8 Watch will be compatible with previous Watch bands, something Apple has prioritized across the years.

Titanium?

There will be no Apple Watch Edition in titanium, it’s claimed, though since Mark Gurman has claimed that the Pro model might be in titanium, that could be why.

Sensors

The hoped-for temperature sensor may not be on board, it’s claimed, as the source couldn’t see any visual indication of new sensors. Though that’s not to say it’s not there, just that it’s not visible.

Anything Else?

Two little nuggets, actually. First, the box seal will have stronger glue so once opened it’s harder to reseal it, which sounds like a smart security feature to me.

And, secondly, it looks like the Watch is on track for release in September, with no delays. Hurrah.

With the next Apple special event expected to take place in the first half of September, there’s not long to wait.
