As elderly Chambersburg man is scammed out of $30k in bitcoin, be wary of digital scams

16 November 2023- Pennsylvania State Police are investigating multiple digital or bitcoin thefts that have taken place online in Franklin and Cumberland Counties.

PSP just released information this week about a reported theft of over $30,600 in cryptocurrency from an elderly Chambersburg man. Police were originally dispatched on October 6th to a home on Mahantango Drive in Hamilton Township for a reported theft. The victim was able to tell police that they sent money in a scam via bitcoin to an unknown person. This investigation is still being investigated by PSP, with the victim out $30,600.00.

In South Newton Township, Cumberland County, PSP is investigating a theft of an unknown amount from a bank. Police say they were alerted around 8:45a on November 7th by Members 1st Credit Union in Shippensburg that “a theft occurred in cyber space”. PSP is tight lipped on the details, but remind people to not give personal information over the phone.

Anyone who is a victim of these types of theft should contact their relevant police department, whether that’s a borough police office or PSP in Chambersburg, Carlisle, or McConnellsburg.
