THREE RIVERS, MI – Scammers are targeting businesses by attempting to dupe overnight employees into depositing daily cash into Bitcoin machines.
The Three Rivers Police Department, located in southwestern Michigan, has been seeing an increase in telephone scams targeting retail businesses during overnight hours, Police Chief Scott Boling said.
The caller poses as the business owner and directs employees to withdraw cash from the business and take it to a Bitcoin machine to deposit it, breaking from the business’s standard way of depositing cash, Boling said.
A Bitcoin machine is an automated teller machine that allows users to buy or sell bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies using a terminal.”
Boling asks local businesses, particularly those operating during overnight hours, to educate their employees and provide them with points of contact to prevent telephone scams.
