Budget Poco M7 Pro Has Enough Value to Compete With Midrangers

Poco is a Xiaomi sub-brand that was established to compete with overpriced flagships. The first Poco phone brought similar specs to the prevailing flagship phones of the era but cost nearly half the price. It was a pretty instant way for the brand to get a whole lot of spotlight. That DNA hasn’t been diluted much either, which is a good thing.

Today, the Poco M7 Pro has the spotlight, as the brand has just made it official. It’s not quite a flagship killer like the Poco F7 series that was launched some weeks ago, but for a device that can be considered budget, it does a whole lot to compete with the best in its segment. I might even say it has enough value to go head to head with some midrangers.

The Poco M7 Pro Won’t Burn a Hole in Your Wallet, Yet You Won’t Need to Compromise

The Poco M7 Pro is a budget device, and that shows in the restraint it has in some spec categories. However, when you compare its spec sheet to similarly-priced phones from big brands like Samsung, you’ll see that you get a lot of value. In fact, for a budget device, you won’t be compromising that seriously.

The Design

When you buy a low-cost phone, I think you should be glad as long as it isn’t hideous. That’s not the case with Poco M7 Pro 5G, thankfully. It doesn’t have my favorite design in the world, but I think it looks nice, especially in the green colorway.

You get a vertically oriented dual-camera setup in the upper left corner of the back panel. The cameras are contained within a rounded square camera bump with the flash in the upper right of that square. The back panel also has a dual-tone design, with a plain two-thirds at the left and a sort of marble look on the right three-thirds. The phone comes in Green, Silver, and Purple, and the effect looks nice regardless of the colorway.

The Screen

The Poco M7 Pro 5G has a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display that can get as bright as 2,100 nits. That makes it the brightest Poco M device yet. Of course, it is 2025, so it is no surprise that the phone gets support for 120Hz. There’s also 2,160Hz touch sampling, which is something the gamers will be happy to hear about.

The Hardware

On the hardware front, you’ll get a MediaTek Dimensity 7025-Ultra. It’s not the best chip in the world, scoring 477,003 on AnTuTu, but it is one of the best in its market segment, and that’s actually what counts. Plus, the chip comes with support for 5G, so even though you’re paying less, you still get top network speeds.

The phone comes in two storage configurations. Either way, you’ll get 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage, but you can pair it with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The OEM also advertises that you can use its Memory Extension feature to add 12GB of extra RAM, but to be honest, I generally don’t take that feature and its various analogs too seriously.

You also get NFC, Dolby Atmos, a fingerprint sensor built into the display, and an IR blaster. There’s also support for Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 5.

The Battery and Charging

In this department, this budget phone matches the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. You get a bigger 5,110mAh battery and the same 45W charging that the $1,000+ smartphone has. There’s no wireless charging, but it shouldn’t be expected in this segment.

The Cameras

Poco chose a 50MP Sony IMX882 sensor with OIS as the primary camera for this one. It should definitely do the job well enough. The 2MP depth sensor might not do too much, but it should make your portraits look a little better. On the flip side, you’ll find a 20MP selfie camera.

The Poco M7 Pro 5G will be available in Europe, sadly not finding its way to North America. In the UK, the phone will retail at a starting price of £199/€239 ($258). However, up until April 7th, you’ll get the chance to buy the phone for only £140/€199 ($215) if you place a £1 deposit.
