Can you play Xbox Series X games on Xbox One X?


It’s been a few years since Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X and Series S and in that time the company has accumulated a large library of games optimised for the console. The question is, will these same titles run on older Xbox One X consoles? 

If you haven’t gotten around to upgrading to the Series X just yet but do want to access the latest titles and sequels, you’ll be happy to hear that Microsoft offers a way to do just that. 

It isn’t quite as simple as the Series X’s backward compatibility, which allows you to play a selection of titles from the Xbox One X, Xbox 360 and even the original Xbox on the current-gen console. However, it is possible.

Can you play Xbox Series X games on Xbox One X? 

You can play Xbox Series X games on an Xbox One, but there are some caveats. 

First of all, the games need to be digital versions. This is because the physical disks designed for the Series X are not compatible with older consoles. For this reason, we wouldn’t recommend running out and buying any current-gen titles if you’re an Xbox One X player.

If that title has been released on both consoles – such as Forza Horizon 5 or Elden Ring – you can play the digital version of either console. You can check which specific games are available on the Xbox One X on the Microsoft Store.

Likewise, if a game is available via Xbox Cloud Gaming you can access it on an older console this way. That is, provided you have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription which will set you back £10.99/$15.99 a month. This tier gives Xbox One X gamers access to titles like The Medium and Microsoft Flight Simulator.
