General Election contests in two congressional districts that include the Times News coverage area were set up in Tuesday’s Primary Election when a Republican nomination, the lone challenged race, was decided in the 8th District.
As a result of the balloting Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, a Democrat, will face James R. Bognet, who he defeated in the 2020 election, for the two-year term in the 8th District, and U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, a Republican, will face Democrat Amanda R. Waldman in the 9th District. Meuser will no longer represent Carbon County, as it was moved to the 7th District, although his district still includes Schuylkill County.
Bognet was a huge winner over former Hazleton Mayor Michael P. Marsicano in the 8th District, winning by a margin of 44,803 to 20,280.
Cartwright received 56,064 complimentary votes from Democratic voters.
The district includes all of Lackawanna, Pike and Wayne counties, parts of Luzerne County and parts of Monroe County consisting of the townships of Barrett, Chestnuthill, Coolbaugh, Hamilton, Jackson, Middle Smithfield, Paradise, Pocono, Price and a portion of Ross, Smithfield, Stroud, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock and the boroughs of Delaware Water Gap, East Stroudsburg, Mount Pocono and Stroudsburg.
Meuser was unopposed in the 9th District balloting Tuesday and received 99,180 token votes from the Republicans. Waldman was also unchallenged and netted 39,061 complimentary votes.
In addition to all of Schuylkill County, the 9th District includes all of Bradford, Columbia, Lebanon, Montour, Northumberland, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties and parts of Berks, Luzerne and Lycoming counties.
