The Bloomfield Township Police Department is investigating a reported theft of $204,024 in Bitcoin from a resident.

According to police, the victim’s personal cell phone was hacked through a SIM swap.

SIM swapping, also known as SIM hijacking, happens when the hacker takes control of someone’s mobile number, then tricks the cell phone provider into transferring that number to a mobile device controlled by the hacker. The hacker then accesses online accounts tied to that mobile number.

This recent Bloomfield Township case was reported on May 9. The victim, who lives on Pine Tree Trail, reportedly told police that the large sum of Bitcoin had been withdrawn from his Coinbase account.
