Check out OPPO’s self-developed retractable camera

OPPO’s annual OPPO INNO Day is being held in China next week which will see the brand show off its latest concepts, software, and perhaps tease its upcoming devices. Ahead of the event, though, OPPO has taken to Twitter to unveil its self-developed retractable camera.

When we say retractable you might be thinking back to phones such as the Find X with its sliding rear panel that revealed the camera or the Reno 10X Zoom that had a pop-up selfie camera, but you’d be mistaken. This new retractable camera pops in and out for more than just cosmetic reasons, it’s likely to be a way to bring real optical zoom to a smartphone camera. What’s more, it even appears to be water-resistant and will retract if it senses that the phone is falling.

The camera in question is shown to have a 1/1.58-inch sensor with the equivalent of 50mm focal length and an F/2.4 aperture. It’s not confirmed how many megapixels this sensor but if it does indeed bring optical zoom into the mix then it would negate the need for a dedicated telephoto or periscope lens on the device.

We don’t have too long to wait to find out more details on this retractable camera with OPPO hopefully revealing more about this and its other technological achievements next week.
