Do you know how a lot of major car manufacturers are committing to all-electric lineups at some point in the future? I wonder if that’ll be the case for phones 10 or 15 years from now. Maybe when foldable tech becomes good enough, major smartphone OEMs will push their foldables as the true flagships of their portfolios.
Unfortunately, in the present day, it’s a little harder for customers in the United States to grab onto the foldable wave fully. Sure, they have access to the Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola options, but there are so many more out there. The best foldables don’t make their way to the US and that’s a problem, especially with Oppo’s Find N5 coming.
The Oppo Find N5 Will Be a Groundbreaking Foldable but US Buyers Won’t Get It
We’ve been anticipating the Oppo Find N5 pretty hotly, for many reasons. It’s going to be the thinnest foldable in the world, but despite that, it will still manage to be chock-full of some of the best specs that a foldable could dream of. If you’re a foldable lover, it’d be a mistake not to keep your eye closely locked in on it, especially as we’re expecting its global launch on February 20th—in a few days.
However, “global” in that sense doesn’t include the United States or even North America. The Oppo Find N5 will likely be available in China, Singapore, and other Asian countries, and outside that continent, Europe might be the only other region that’ll be able to get the phone.
The OnePlus Open 2 Isn’t Coming Anymore, So There’s Even Less Hope for US Consumers
When the OnePlus Open launched in 2023, it was essentially 1:1 with the Oppo Find N3, so it was quite natural for us to expect the same pattern to play out with the Oppo Find N5 and the OnePlus Open 2. OnePlus almost always services the US, so that would have provided an easy way to get the magic of Oppo’s new device without needing to ship it in from another country at an added cost.
Unfortunately, OnePlus recently announced that they’ve put a pause on their foldable plans, which means that the OnePlus Open 2 simply isn’t coming anymore, and that’s a pretty big tragedy.
This particularly sucks because the OnePlus Open 2 could have been the best book-style foldable that consumers could get in the US in 2025. Unfortunately, it seems that Google and Samsung’s 2025 options could end up being the only ones available. Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor make some pretty kick-ass foldables too, but just like Oppo, there’s no reason to believe those will make their way across the ocean. That’s sad.
The Oppo Find N5 Would Have Been a Good Sidekick to Your Mac
Apple is an American company, so the popularity of Mac computers is hardly surprising. Apple and Android platforms rarely play nice, but the Oppo Find N5 would have been a really sweet option for those who like Android phones and Mac computers.
Chen Xi, an Oppo exec, revealed that the O+ Connect feature in ColorOS on the Find N5 would make it possible to operate your Mac computer remotely, via your foldable. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this feature (Vivo has done it before), but it is still as cool as the first time. Foldables are great for productivity and this feature would make them even better in that regard.
