COVID vaccination card can be stored on iPhone, Apple watch with iOS update

As an increasing number of stores, venues and employers are requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination, Apple has plans to make it easier to show your status.

In an upcoming update, Apple users can choose to add verifiable COVID vaccination records as a vaccination card in Apple Wallet.

A recent update from iOS 15, released on Monday, already allows users to download and store verifiable health records, including COVID vaccinations and test results, in the Health app.

This new technology is based SMART Health Cards, which creates paper or digital versions of clinical information, such as vaccination history or test results to make records easily accessible.

“Organizations that issue SMART Health Cards will soon be able to use a new button to let users know that they can securely download and store their vaccination information in the Health app and quickly add and present it from Wallet,” Apple wrote.

SMART Health Cards contain legal names, date of birth and necessary clinical information like vaccination type, date and location. The cards do not contain a phone number, an address, a government-issued identifier or any other health information.

Users can also share their health records, like proof of vaccination, with approved third-party apps that may request information. For example, airlines, event venues and other businesses.

Artwork and usage guidelines will be released soon, according to Apple.
