Cryptocurrency ‘JRR Token’ is blocked by Tolkein’s lawyers

The US-based creator paid an undisclosed figure to the author’s estate as legal costs

Lawyers representing the estate of world-renowned author JRR Tolkein, creator of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, have taken legal action against the creator of the crypto coin ‘JRR Token.’

The coin which was launched in August 2021 under the domain ‘jrrtoken.com’, was said by the estate, to breach the trademark of the author.

“The Tolkien estate is vigilant in preventing unauthorised parties from taking advantage of the JRR Tolkien name and the content of JRR Tolkien’s literary works,” commented Steven Maier, solicitor for the Tolkien estate.

It was effectively recovered by Tolkein’s estate without any conflict from the token’s designer and all operations related to the coin were ceased.

The US-based creator paid an undisclosed figure to the author’s estate as legal costs.

“This was a particularly flagrant case of infringement and the estate is pleased that it has been concluded on satisfactory terms,” added Maier.
