Cyberpunk 2077 next-gen version coming early 2022, major update and expansion in the works

Cyberpunk 2077 is an ambitious and expansive RPG experience, and there are still many players waiting for the quintessential version to dive into everything it has to offer. On Monday, CD PROJEKT RED provided an update as part of its Q3 2021 financial earnings report on its plans for Cyberpunk 2077 and more, highlighting that there are still big things to come for this much-maligned open-world sci-fi spectacle.

Cyberpunk 2077 already provides a fantastic experience on PC, and is pretty solid on current-gen powerhouses like Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PS5. However, the game is technically running as a last-gen title and isn’t properly optimized for the newer consoles. Fans have been eagerly waiting on this update for ages. According to the CDPR update, the current-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 is now scheduled for release in early 2022; a target that, hopefully, won’t slip any further.

The team is also working on a major cross-platform update for Cyberpunk 2077. This update presumably will further fix bugs and optimize the title across platforms, especially on the aging Xbox One and PS4 families of consoles (which historically provide a majorly flawed experience in Cyberpunk 2077). Finally, the first expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development. We may get an update on when to expect this in the near future.

Elsewhere in the update, CD PROJEKT RED confirmed that it’s continuing to work on the current-gen version for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD PROJEKT is also expanding, with two new teams joining the group recently.

It’ll be interesting to see how Cyberpunk 2077 evolves over time. While still one of the best Xbox games and best PC games for fans of epic RPGs — especially if you’re playing on more modern hardware like Xbox Series X|S — many members of the gaming community have heavily criticized the title for its unpolished experience on older machines and the plethora of bugs that plague it.
