Daggerfall Unity – GOG Cut, a special version of the classic RPG Daggerfall, has been taken down from the GOG store. However, you can still get the game from other sources.
The GOG team announced in a forum post that the store release was outdated and didn’t meet its goal of providing an easy-to-use modded experience. The team reassured users that anyone who has already purchased it can still access it in their GOG libraries. GOG also said the team was working on finding better ways to publish and maintain similar projects in the future.
Although GOG has a program to preserve games, it mainly aims to keep the original versions intact rather than keeping up with community projects like Daggerfall Unity. GOG’s decision to not regularly update the GOG Cut aligns with their usual practice of focusing on stable and functional versions of games instead of constantly changing source ports.
While the GOG Cut of Daggerfall Unity is free, it received some criticism. One major issue is that it wasn’t getting regular updates, which made it outdated and prone to bugs. There are also concerns about not giving enough recognition to the modders who helped create the GOG Cut. In fact, the official Daggerfall Unity website recommends against using the GOG cut and says the GOG version is two years outdated.
The main issue is that Daggerfall Unity relies on multiple mods, not just one version of the game. It’s a pack to add to the original game instead of a base installation. This means GOG would likely need to run any updates by every member involved, and that’s a lot to do just to keep a game.
Luckily, the original Daggerfall game is still free on GOG and Steam, even though the modified version has been taken down. Those who want to play the Unity version can get the original game through Steam and follow the official instructions to add the Unity version.
