The Discord app for Linux has finally received the long-requested feature to share in-game audio when using the screen-sharing feature in the app.
The feature is live in the latest version of Discord for Linux. After choosing which screen or app you wish to share, you’ll see a new toggle to “Also share system audio” below the What You’re Streaming heading in the dialog. Ticking this box will share system audio alongside your Discord screen, ensuring you can finally hear the in-game audio while streaming.
Discord has not published release notes for the latest update on its Changelog page, and the official Discord blog doesn’t mention this feature either, but many users have reported seeing the new toggle in the latest update.
For years, Linux fans have been asking for the ability to share system audio when streaming in chats or server channels using Discord screen sharing. I found years-old complaints about the Discord Linux app not supporting streaming with audio on online forums like Reddit and Discord’s own feedback tracker, so this has been among the top feature requests from the community.
The Windows and macOS clients have supported audio sharing for some time now. However, the compoany has been uncharacteristically mum on the prospect of bringing this feature to Discord for Linux, but it’s finally here now. It was also available in Discord Canary, an experimental version of the Discord client for testing new features. However, you had to turn it on while manually adding the Flathub beta repository and the Wayland protocol.
Discord is a service for community-driven communications that all types of people use, not just gamers, even though Discord caters to gamers with features like Twitch integration. In fact, Discord has renewed its focus on gamers by promising gaming-focused features and updates. “We believe Discord can play a uniquely important role in the future of gaming,” the company said in May 2024. “We’ve recognized the need to narrow our focus from broadly being a community-centric chat app to being a place that helps people deepen their friendships around games and shared interests.”
