Disney+ Will Not Only Hike Prices But Fight Password Sharing

There are a lot of streaming services out there these days, with each of them fighting to offer more exclusive content than the others — or at the very least, exclusive content that’s more popular and more desired by the general populace.

Disney+ does a pretty good job at this by laying claim to Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney content, all of which are insanely popular umbrellas for one service to hold all at once. However, things are going to change as Disney+ is about to increase its prices and crack down on password sharing all at once.

Disney+ Will Join Netflix In The Hall Of Notoriety By Restricting How You Can Share Your Password

We all know it isn’t exactly “right” to share our passwords to paid subscriptions since it gives another person access even if they didn’t pay anything. But hey, it’s been around for ages and probably became most relevant when Netflix came around since that single password can give you access to thousands of movies and TV series. At a point though, Netflix decided to say no to password sharing, which was met with a lot of heat.

Now, Disney+ is going to join Netflix with a crackdown on how you’ll be able to share your account with other people outside of your household, and this is expected to start in September. In February this year, the company stated it’d be doing “paid sharing”, which some countries have gotten since, but the US isn’t one of those.

However, from this new revelation, we expect that US customers will finally get the option for paid sharing in September. Netflix’s model makes you pay $7.99 for each extra user under that account, but there’s no idea how much Disney+ will expect people to pay if they want to share a password.

Some Customers Won’t Like This, But I Certainly Get Why They Do It

It’s not hard to understand why any company offering a digital service might eventually get to a point where it doesn’t want you to share a password with a person who isn’t paying. It’s money out of their pocket and in a way, I suppose it can be classified as piracy. In an ideal world, everyone who uses Netflix or Disney+ would have a password of their own, but that’s not the world we live in.

Of course, this is a very unpopular move to make in the eyes of the actual customers (most particularly the ones who are using someone else’s password). But at the end of the day, the company will prefer to prioritize its profits over non-paying users.

All Of Disney’s Streaming Services Will Be Hit With A Price Increase Soon

Disney owns Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu, and all three of those streaming services are going to have their prices hiked in October, right after the password-sharing restrictions are put in place.

The actual price jump isn’t known yet, but that’s another move that’s certainly not going to go down well. The streaming services made their first profit this quarter though, and that’s likely why the company is pushing to keep that momentum going with these unpopular decisions.
