DJI is known for their content creation tech, having drones, action cameras, microphones and stabilizers. As smartphone cameras improve each year, people rise to make more photos and videos.
For a lot of mid-range smartphones, a lot tend to not have Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) or electronic image stabilization (EIS). This is where DJI’s newest technology, the DJI Osmo Mobile 7p comes into play.
So, what does the DJI Osmo Mobile 7p offer in the playing field of mobile stabilizers? Let’s find out.
What’s new
The DJI Osmo Mobile 7p shares a very similar design with its predecessor, the DJI Osmo Mobile 6. They both have the identical foldable design that is compact.
One of the new additions is a multifunctional module. This has a tiny sensor with LED lights just right beside where the phone clamps on. It comes with different temperatures of lighting that can also be adjusted by how bright you want it to flash. Not only will this allow users to have an additional light source, but it can also track users thanks to the sensor below the lights.
The tiny camera can register specific commands based on the users’ hand gestures. Showing two fingers will tell the device to start recording or take a photo. Meanwhile, showing the whole palm of your hand will register the device to track the user. This will make sure that any movement the user makes, the stabilizer will make sure that they are in frame.
Activating the tracker can also be done with the newest addition on the Mobile 7p. There is a trigger on the back of the stabilizer that registers quick commands.
One click allows the stabilizer to make sure that your face or the subject you select is in frame. Clicking twice will snap the phone back to its first position when you turn on the device. Finally, pressing the trigger thrice in quick successions will rotate your smartphone, flipping it to show either the front or rear of your device.
Device and Software
Like the Osmo Mobile 6, DJI’s latest mobile stabilizer also has the ability to turn on the moment you unfold the device. Thanks to magnets, you can snap your smartphone on the stabilizer through its clamp.
The Osmo Mobile 7p also has a built-in extension rod to get better angles to shoot from. The device can also stand on its own through unsheathing its legs from the bottom, staying in place wherever you place it.
There is a knob on the left that can adjust the zoom of the camera while the joystick on the middle moves the stabilizer, rotating it based on the four modes of the Osmo Mobile 7p. These modes can be cycled through the M button on the stabilizer.
The DJI Osmo Mobile 7p can last up to ten hours of battery life. This is a jump compared to the Mobile 6’s six hours. You can see the battery level, the system status indicator, and gimbal modes all on the little screen above the joystick, record and rotate buttons. This is also beside the button that changes the gimbal modes.
The DJI Osmo Mobile 7p connects to a smartphone through Bluetooth. It works best with the DJI Mimo application, but it can run on your usual Camera app just fine too.
The app allows you to not only take photos and videos, but also go through creations from other users and even edit your own clips on the app itself. You can add filters, adjust color corrections like exposure, brightness, highlights and the like, beautify and take quick screenshots.
Price and Verdict
As of writing this article, we do not have the official price of the DJI Osmo Mobile 7p. If this is your first stabilizer, it is surely a good addition to ramp up your photo and video shooting capabilities. Its features provide ways to make sure you not only get different angles to capture your shots, but also guarantee that you won’t have shaky footage either.
But, other than the few new additions and increased battery life, if you are thinking of upgrading your stabilizer from the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 to the 7p, you may want to reconsider. The multifunctional module is a great add-on, yes, but most of the features that the Mobile 7p has can be done by the Mobile 6.
