Duolingo Wants to Give You Music Lessons, Too

Aside from being the source of many memes, the Duolingo app is actually a legitimately useful resource. While it likely won’t make you speak fluent French alone (that’s on you to actually practice and speak the language), it does allow you to get started with new languages in a fun and engaging manner with bite-sized language lessons. More recently, it has looked to pivot to teaching more than just languages, in what’s an attempt to become a one-stop-shop for learning stuff in general. It’s now looking to venture into music lessons, too.

Duolingo has announced that it will soon be rolling out a music teaching experience. With it, Duolingo says that you’ll have hundreds of tiny lessons that will teach you, along the way, everything about musical notes and how you can play music — the company says that users will have access to a library of over 200 songs. Like the standard Duolingo lessons you’re familiar with, music lessons will also be fun and intuitive, and users will be able to check out games such as “fill in the blanks” and “match the pairs.”

This is not the first time Duolingo ventures out of language learning. It also recently rolled out a math-learning app on iOS that gives you gamified math lessons for both kids and adults. There is also an app called Duolingo ABC, which is meant for young children to learn how to read. All of these apps and experiences say that they teach stuff the “Duolingo way,” which is through small, interactive lessons that take, at most, two minutes each. If it works for languages, then it must certainly work for other stuff as well.

According to Duolingo’s co-founder and CTO, Severin Hacker, “we know math and music, much like language, transcend cultures and connect people,” going on to add that “soon you will be able to learn math and music in the same Duolingo app — all with the same fun, engaging, and effective experience you know from learning languages with us.”

While the math learning experience is a separate app on iOS, it sounds like Duolingo wants to bring both music and math to the main app. This will be cleared up during the company’s Duocon conference on October 11th, so if you like the way Duolingo teaches stuff, you’ll probably want to mark that date.
