EE plots a post-Brexit cash grab by reintroducing Europe roaming charges from January 2022

In totally unpredictable news the UK network, EE has today announced that it will re-introduce roaming charges for customers that travel to Europe from January next year. It was only in January 2021 that EE (O2, Three, and Vodafone) originally said that it ‘had no plans’ to reintroduce roaming charges but less than 6 months later, EE is the first UK network to break ranks in a blatant money grab.

It was only in 2017 that Britons were finally able to enjoy using their call and data allowances in Europe without needing to pay exorbitant roaming charges to their networks for often substandard connections, thanks to an EU ruling. Now that the UK’s Brexit folly is in full flow, it seems that the UK networks are taking their gloves off as they plot a way to pad their bottom lines by once again fleecing the British public.

While EE states that the roaming charges would “support investment into our UK-based customer service and leading UK network”, charging £2 a day to use the data, calls, and text allowance that customers are already paying for is a kick in the teeth. Customers visiting the 47 countries in the EU block will also be to buy 30-day passes to use their home tariff, the cost of which will depend on which tariff they have signed up to.

O2 is also dipping its toes into the roaming fees pond by announcing that it will add a “fair usage” cap of 25GB of date each month, although it says that it won’t charge its customers more for using their phones in the EU. Three UK announced something similar by reducing its fair usage limit from 20GB down to 12GB from next month.
