Fences is a Windows utility from Stardock Software that allows you to add quick-access panels to your desktop for files, applications, and other data. Stardock has now released the first beta of Fences 6, and there are a few new features worth cheking out.
One major addition is the tabbed interface, which lets users group several fences into tabs, similar to how web browser tab groups work. This makes for a cleaner and more modern desktop layout. Additionally, users can easily rearrange these tabbed groups using drag-and-drop functionality.
It looks cool and acts like folders that are open on your screen. While I mentioned browser tab groups before, your phone’s screen is another good comparison. Just like you can put apps into mini folders that you can open and look at quickly, these tabs are easily accessible.
This is good for a desktop version because you don’t need to open anything to look through it. It is open for you to browse through, and you can put different groups in different areas so it is not cluttering one part of the screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if this became a standard in operating systems because it is way too clean to ignore. This keeps folders clean and doesn’t force users to limit what they can put on a screen just to keep it organized.
The colors typically get mixed in for you when updates come with color schemes, which can be distracting. I still don’t like going with default colors in any browser because they don’t mix well. I like going for custom colors, and it seems like Fences 6 is ahead of me.
A key feature is the ability to tint all desktop icons in one color, which helps keep things organized and reduces distractions. There’s also a new color picker tool that makes choosing the color you want easier.
One of the images shown above shows that the tabbed interface can be altered so that different groups show different colors. This would blend well with certain backgrounds and show how much time went into the user experience. The ability to match colors to the desktop background normally gets overlooked, but this tab interface worked with the new color schemes.
The navigation for Folder Portal has also been improved to make it easier to use. Fences 6 now works better with ARM-based devices, which makes it compatible with the newest Windows systems.
Fences 6 for Business offers better tools for setting up and managing desktop organizations in companies. It lets users create standardized setups with different settings, making managing how desktops are organized across a company easier. For larger businesses, Stardock also offers tailored deployment options. Just keep in mind that this is still in beta, so it’s not going to be perfect, and there may even be issues that come with being in a testing phase.
The beta version lets users try out the new features and even share their thoughts with the developers. If you are using this for businesses, it may be a good idea to hold off until an official release and stick to version 5.
Fences, in general, already has over 20 million downloads, which shows that people love the software and that the company has done a good job updating it with features that users want. It’s hard to say no when the price is also budget-friendly.
The beta version of Fences 6 is currently on sale for $8.99 on the official website, down from the regular price of $9.99, which is a steal since it’s a very small cost to get an upgrade. You can also get this software as part of the Object Desktop suite. It works on Windows 10 or 11, across both x86 and ARM devices.
