Following canceled theatrical release, new movie ‘Wolfs’ premieres today on Apple TV+

Featuring two Hollywood big stars in Brad Pitt and George Clooney, Wolfs was originally anticipated to be Apple’s biggest box office film to date, until it was unceremoniously pulled from wide theatrical release last month.

Following a limited theatrical run last week, the action comedy movie is now premiering today exclusively on the Apple TV+ streaming service.

Wolfs has been generally well received by critics, currently holding a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The action comedy see Pitt and Clooney playing fixers who have to work together to patch up a crime scene, in an increasingly eventful nighttime job.

Apple did not publicly explain its reasoning for switching the release strategy for Wolfs, despite simultaneously announcing development plans for a sequel.

Some industry publications suggested Apple didn’t like the negative PR that came about when some of its earlier originals, like Argylle and Fly Me to the Moon, flopped at the box office. Rather than risk more embarrassment, it changed its approach and pulled Wolfs from its theatrical slate altogether. Another Apple film that was initially expected to go to theatrical, Blitz, is also destined for a limited run followed by life on streaming, in November.

Looking ahead, Apple now only has one movie heading to cinemas, F1, coincidentally also starring Brad Pitt, which is dated for June 2025. It remains to be seen whether it will announce more theatrical ventures going forward. The current expectation is Apple might only support one big theatrical film per year.
