Fujifilm just revealed its new Instax Wide Evo Hybrid Instant Camera. It has a wider lens than the company’s previous instant cameras, and photographs twice as wide.
The new Wide Evo hybrid instant camera features a rotating 15.67mm lens, the widest of any Instax camera, which enables it to capture wider shots with more information than before. Using Instax’s new film format, you can print photographs that are twice as wide as before. If you don’t want to take wide-angle images, you can turn off this feature quickly. The camera is much larger than Fujifilm’s previous Instax Mini Evo that hit the United States in 2022.
The new Wide Evo is Fujifilm’s first wide-format hybrid camera. It doubles as a wireless printer for iOS and Android devices and lets you use your phone as a remote shutter. Fujifilm announced the camera on January 20 ahead of its scheduled arrival in February. Like other hybrid Instax cameras, this one has an LCD screen on the back to frame your shots before printing instead of the traditional viewfinder. That’s certainly helpful; for a camera marketed as “instant,” ease of use should be high on the list of priorities. To help you frame selfies, Fujifilm equipped the Wide Evo with a small mirror out the front.
Fuji didn’t release other specifications beyond stating the built-in memory can hold approximately 45 images. Thankfully, an SD card slot expands the available imaging storage. You can print up to 100 photos before needing to recharge the internal battery.
The underlying software allows you to choose from ten lens effects and ten film effects. Then, dial the ring on the lens to adjust the effect intensity, with a preview visible on the LCD screen. For a retro contact sheet look, you can apply effects to your prints, such as film strip holes, the timestamp superimposed in the corner, or a vintage collodion process effect. The mobile app offers remote trigger functionality and brings additional image enhancement options. There’s even a feed with other people’s images that you can explore in the app and apply their effects and style settings to your own photos.
The new Instax Wide Evo Hybrid Instant Camera will be available in the United States and Canada starting in February 2025, priced at $350 in US dollars and $480 in CAD. Fujifilm will also offer a black carrying case for $50 ($70 in CAD), which lets you use the camera without removing it completely. The Instax Wide instant film with a brushed metallic border effect will be sold as a 10-pack for $25 apiece ($18 in CAD).
