Fast on the heels of offering a Nintendo Switch, $200, or a Chromebook for signing up to its Home 5G Internet, Verizon has unveiled another, possibly more useful plan that lets you add a second number to your phone without needing a second SIM card or smartphone. The new plan is appropriately called ‘Second Number,’ which gives you unlimited talking and text for $10* monthly.
Second Number
Verizon says it’s launching Second Number because more people have side hustles, such as selling on online marketplaces or driving people places, and need to keep them separate from our personal lines. Often, we’ll get a separate phone for this purpose, but with Second Number, you can just add the second line to your phone provided it has Dual SIM functionality.
New and existing postpaid Verizon customers with dual-SIM devices can sign up for Second Number. Once signed up, you’ll either receive a second SIM in the post or be able to download an e-SIM to your phone. And don’t worry—if you upgrade your handset, the Second Number line will automatically transfer to the new device.
Sign Up Before June 5
Why, I hear you ask? If you sign up before June 5th, you’ll lock in the $10 monthly fee. If you sign up on June 6 or later, Verizon will charge you $15 monthly, which means you’ll pay 50% more. That means you’ve just under three months to decide if you need a second number without paying an extra $5 monthly for the privilege.
Verizon says there is no activation fee and that unlimited text and talk are available in Canada and Mexico. The carrier also points out that if you spend more than half your time in Canada or Mexico over a 60-day period, it reserves the right to suspend the Second Number service. In case you are wondering, data is provided by your primary Verizon number.
You’ll see which line receives the call or message when you receive an incoming call or text. When replying to the message, the number that received will be used to send it. This could help you organize your contacts and avoid spam calls or minimize calls from people you don’t want to speak to.
What can I use the Second Number For?
Anything that involves sending or receiving calls and texts. There are a host of reasons why you might need a second line on your phone, and the majority of them aren’t nefarious in any way.
- Keep your work life separate from your personal life
- Replace your landline
- Designate the second number for use with a special someone
- Use it as your spam number when filling out forms
- Use it for dating when you aren’t sure if the person is a ‘keeper’
- Use it as a dedicated number for two-factor authentication
Whatever reason you need a second line, Verizon has you covered, and we aren’t judging you. Sign up for Second Number online via the link below or head to a Verizon store. Remember, if you sign up by June 5th, you’ll save $5 over the people who signed up on June 6 and after.
