Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei is geared up to release on October 2, 2025. The follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima will launch exclusively for the PlayStation 5, and just over a year after it was first announced. “[I]t’s important to us to make this a worthy follow-up to Jin’s journey, and we can’t wait for you to experience Atsu’s quest for vengeance later this year,” Sucker Punch’s senior communications manager Andrew Goldfarb wrote in a PlayStation Blog post announcing the release date. Ghost of Yotei won’t be a direct sequel to Tsushima; instead, it’ll introduce a new protagonist in a new region in 1600s Japan.
What to Expect From Ghost of Yotei
The accompanying trailer explores Atsu’s journey. Similarly to Naoe in last month’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Atsu will be hunting down those responsible for killing her family. “Revenge is a classic samurai cinema trope, and we love samurai cinema. Atsu is going to hunt down the members of the Yotei Six that did her wrong and get revenge,” co-creative director Nate Fox told Variety.
“People start to think she’s more than human. They start to think that she is an onryō, which is a folk tale ghost that is an unstoppable force for vengeance.”
Goldfarb noted that Atsu’s journey is not all about taking revenge. Just like Jin in the first game, Atsu will come across allies that help her focus on life outside of her quest for revenge. “As she explores Ezo, Atsu will meet unlikely allies and forge connections that help give her a new sense of purpose.” You’ll be able to take on bounties, pursue other targets, and engage in more peaceful activities, some of which will return from the first game. In terms of gameplay, the trailer shows off Atsu downing enemies using an odachi, a kusarigama, and dual katanas.
Ghost of Yotei Deluxe and Collector’s Editions
In addition to the standard edition at $69.99, Sony will be releasing two more editions of Ghost of Yotei. For $10 more, the Digital Deluxe Edition includes The Snake’s armor set–one of Atsu’s targets–as well as a purple dye for Atsu’s starting armor, unique horse cosmetics, a charm, a gold sword kit, and an early map unlock.
Continuing a frustrating trend, the Collector’s Edition includes a bunch of physical goodies but no physical game disc; you’ll receive a digital copy of the game instead and the bonuses included in the Digital Deluxe Edition. Collectors will be able to enjoy a resin Ghost mask, a cotton blend sash, art cards, and more. However, the price for the Collector’s Edition has not been announced yet.
Ghost of Yotei preorders start May 2 at 10:00 AM EST, and all preorders will receive an avatar set and a gold mask for Atsu. With Ghost of Yotei on the calendar, 2025 is looking pretty good for Sony. The Last of Us is currently airing on HBO and Lost Souls Aside and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach are set to drop in May and June, respectively.
