Giants-Jets Super Bowl? Big Apple has NFL buzzing

To dream the impossible dream.

The Big Apple has the NFL buzzing as both the New York Giants and New York Jets continued their improbable runs on Sunday.

The Giants came back to beat the Baltimore Ravens, 24-20, at MetLife Stadium while the Jets stunned the Green Bay Packers, 27-10, at Lambeau Field.

Per ESPN research, the Giants improved to 5-1 for the first time since 2009. That’s tied for their best record through 6 games in the last 30 seasons.

Meanwhile the AP reported the Jets, at 4-2, are off to their best six-game start since 2015, when they also were 4-2 before finishing with a 10-6 record.

In addition, ESPN research reported the Jets improved to 3-0 on the road for the first time since 2010. That season was also the last time the Jets made the playoffs.

And then there was this nugget from SI’s Albert Breer: “Giants 5-1, Jets 4-2. Last time either New York team finished with a winning record was in 2016. Last time both finished with a winning record was in 2010.”

On top of that, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported the Giants tied “an NFL record in the Super Bowl era Sunday by winning as an underdog for the fourth time through six games. … The Giants (5-1) are now one of 12 other teams to pull upsets four times in the first six weeks of a season. The New York Jets have also done it this year.”

Following Sunday’s games, NBC Sports was gushing over the Giants and Jets.

Former NFL QB Chris Simms on the Giants: “Playing smart football, what fits their football team. They’re just making the game close waiting for you to make a mistake. They’re very comfortable in those one-score games late in the fourth quarter.”

Hall-of-Fame head coach Tony Dungy on the Jets: “The Jets are better than we thought … A lot of good things happening from that Jets offense and defense; young guns just hustling, fighting, playing well and just getting the job done.”

NBC Sports’ Peter King: “The Jets and Giants are 9-3, combined, for the first time since mastodons (or maybe Joe Willie Namath) roamed the earth.”

The Giants and Jets had Twitter drinking the Kool-Aid Sunday.

FOX Sports’ Emmanuel Acho: “The Giants are 5-1 and just be the 2019 NFL MVP. The #Jets are 4-2 and just beat the 2020 & 2021 @NFL MVP. What a time to be alive!!”

NFL Network’s Dan Handzus: “The Giants and Jets are a combined 9-3. Huh.”

NFL analyst Ross Tucker: “These are not the same old Giants. Or Jets.”

Former Giants and Jets offensive tackle Jumbo Elliott: “Jets. Giants. Hell yeah. Who expected this? Good work.”

New York Post’s Marc Berman: “Last month, when Giants/Jets opened their seasons, Mets/Yankees were looking at very deep Fall runs and football teams were projected to be sagging by mid-October. What the hell happened.”

NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi: “Giants: 5-1. Jets: 4-2. If you saw this coming, take a bow and play the lottery.”
