Google Keep Finally Has Rich Text Formatting

Google Keep is much more than a simple mobile notes app. Sure, it lets you take notes, but it also supports checklists, grocery shopping lists, and other types of reminders and notes. You can also color-code notes, label notes, share them with other users, and a lot more. Now, it’s getting yet another great feature — rich text formatting.

Rich text formatting is something that’s rather minor compared to the usefulness of Keep’s other features, but it’s also something that can come pretty in handy. If you’re typing something, you can bold it, put it in italics, and underline it. You can also use heading styles for better organization. As per reports, the feature had already been rolling out since at least last week, with some of the earliest reports over two weeks ago only becoming available after flipping on some developer flags. Even then, however, the rollout wasn’t properly announced by Google. Now, though, the update has been detailed by the company, which means it’s all but certain to make its way to you now.

Once you fire up Google Keep after updating, if you got rich text formatting, you should see a blue text bubble notifying you about the feature and what it can do. Then, in order to use it, you can click on the underscored A icon in order to expand the options that the app has. You have bold, italics, and underline, as well as H1 (bigger) and H2 (smaller) headings so you can separate notes into sections or better highlight some parts of your notes. This joins the recent addition of other features, such as multi-instance support as well as putting single notes as widgets on your homepage — both of these rolled out in March.

If you want to check out the latest features in Keep, including this new rich text formatting feature, make sure to keep your app updated. According to a timeline provided by Google, this feature is currently rolling out, and it can take a bit over 15 days for it to reach everyone, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see it right now.
